Which AI models are starting to show ads (and what it means for your brand)

Every AI company is figuring out the same thing: giving away answers for free doesn't scale. Here's what's actually happening with ads and monetization across the major models.

Perplexity: ads are already here

Perplexity is the most aggressive. They've been running sponsored follow-up questions and "related" suggestions that are essentially paid placement. When you search for "best project management tool," Perplexity might show a sponsored result before the organic recommendations.

For brands, this creates a two-tier system: organic visibility (free, based on training data and search results) and paid visibility (bought). The paid tier is new territory for AI search.

Google Gemini: ads are coming

Google has the most experience with search ads. Gemini is integrating into Google Search as the AI overview, and Google has explicitly stated they'll introduce ads into AI-generated answers. The format is likely to be similar to what Perplexity is doing — sponsored suggestions within the AI response.

If you're already running Google Ads, you'll eventually be able to buy placement in Gemini's answers. But organic visibility still matters because most users don't click on sponsored results in AI responses the way they do in traditional search.

ChatGPT: no ads yet, but partnerships

OpenAI hasn't announced ads for ChatGPT. But they've done deals with publishers and are building out a shopping feature. When you ask "what should I buy," ChatGPT is starting to surface product listings from merchants.

This is different from ads — it's more like affiliate commerce. But the effect is similar: brands that partner with OpenAI get preferential visibility in shopping queries.

Claude: no commercial interest (yet)

Anthropic's Claude is the least commercial of the major models. No ads, no partnerships, no shopping features. They're focused on safety and research. But this could change as they scale.

What this means for your strategy

The emergence of AI ads creates a new consideration:

Organic GEO still works. Even with ads, the majority of AI responses are organic. Training data presence, structured content, and authoritative mentions still drive visibility.

Paid AI ads will be a new channel. When ChatGPT and Gemini launch ad products, early adopters will get cheap placement because competition will be low initially.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. The AI landscape is fragmenting. Optimize for multiple models, not just ChatGPT. What works on Perplexity (web search + ads) is different from what works on ChatGPT (training data + partnerships).

The brands that win will be the ones that build genuine organic visibility now — while it's free — and layer paid placement on top later when the ad products mature.

SEO vs GEO: what's actually different

GEO isn't SEO with a new label. The mechanics are different, the goals are different, and the tactics that work in one don't necessarily work in the other.
